We finally bought a boat :-)

It seems hard to believe right now, but after years of collecting brochures and visiting boat shows it looks like we finally bought a yacht.

Mouflon

She’s a 2004 Bavaria 38 called “Mouflon”. OK, so she’s named after a sheep – go on, get it out of your system. Took me a while to get used to it.

But then, she’s relatively new, has been beautifully looked after and she’s big enough for all of us.

When I started getting into sailing, I very much enjoyed reading Mishaps & Memories, a blog about a yacht called “Magna Carter”. So, in that spirit, I thought it might be fun to track our own progress. And this seems to be a good place to start.

We haven’t had a formal handover yet, but we have already completed a survey on the boat and arranged finance which was, after a fraught week talking with Lombard Marine, finally approved.

The survey came out fairly positive, the main thing being a small crack in the sealant between the keel and the hull.

Mouflon's Keel

Not really sure what to do about this. The surveyor reommended changing the sealant and checking the torque of the keel bolts if there is any play.

For now, I’ve contacted “boat repair specialists” the Hayling Yacht Company to ask their advice. Will see what comes out of that.

We have a young, inexperienced crew. I’ve completed the RYA Day Skipper courses, so I have some idea of the basics, but my Significant Other has no experience at all. Poor soul, she even got seasick on the North Sea ferry. So naturally she’s feeling a little apprehensive. A friend of ours is an RYA Instructor, and she’ll be coming along to keep us right when we first put to the water.

As for the other crewmates, well our two kids are aged 2 years and 0. We’ve all got a lot to learn.
